Providing Patient Education to prevent non-compliance of the treatment plan.
Annotated Bibliography
Working in the area of Nurse Case Management, the need for ongoing patient education for managing diseases effectively, encouraging medication compliance, keeping scheduled appointments, reporting changes in health status to healthcare providers as indicated and promoting adherence of the nursing/medical care plans, effects timely and quality health outcomes. Ongoing patient education is paramount for effective management of disease processes and to prevent further comorbidities which potentially can affect further increases in our healthcare costs. If patients are instructed on how their disease can be managed to prevent complications and other comorbidities, they are more likely to be compliant. Education on medications and compliance is also very important for proper health management. Patients also need to be aware of the importance for reporting all medications they are prescribed and the supplements they are taking because of the potential interactions or side effects they may cause. Some drugs also potentiate the effects of each other which increases the drug strength and can cause overdose if not monitored appropriately.
Patient “no-shows” are an issue at my organization. If patients are not seen when they are scheduled it can cause delays in their health progress and quality outcomes. It also prevents appointment availability for patients that need to be seen at that time. The organization that I work for receives reimbursement from the government when patients are seen. When they are not seen, no money is received but the Provider still has to be paid. We have to constantly remind our patients that when they do not show up for their appointments or cancel them in a timely manner, it costs the organization money because no patient received care. Selected articles have relevance between the years 2009 to 2016….
