As I read your post, it really made me think about all of the long term consequences for the premature and low birth weight baby. As you pointed out, there are academic differences between low birth weight babies and babies with normal birth weights. These differences are that the low birth weight baby has increased difficulty reading, spelling, as well as having challenges with language and grammer. Are these individuals with learning disabilities included in the statistics as being illiterate? I hear and read so many articles how many americans cannot read and how literacy in the United States continues to be a challenge. Do you think illiteracy in the United States can some how be connected to children with disabilites related to low birth weights?
